- Ceausescu's rise to power
On 24 July 1965, Nicolae Ceausescu is appointed leader of the communist party of Romania. He gives high priority to the pursuit of Romanian independence in the international arena, but without domestic political and economic liberalisation.
- Outbreak of the First World War
The assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand was a spark for increasing tension between European empires and nations. After a month of diplomatic manouvers, on 28 July 1914 Austria-Hungary declared war against Serbia which became the starting point of one of the most brutal and deadly wars in the history.
